The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has welcomed the return of its AS550 A2 Fennec helicopter following a comprehensive overhaul by Airbus in South Africa, restoring a versatile multi-role platform to the Malawi Air Force’s operational fleet.
The aircraft was officially received at Lilongwe Air Base on Monday, 26 October 2026, marking an important step in strengthening the country’s air mobility, surveillance and rapid response capabilities. Its return comes amid continued demand for flexible air support for military operations and national emergencies.
The Fennec is among the aircraft supporting military and national missions in Malawi, offering capabilities for troop and equipment transportation, aerial reconnaissance, disaster response and access to remote communities that may be difficult to reach by road.
Speaking at the reception ceremony, General George Alexander Jaffu (Jnr), Chief of Defence Force, described the helicopter as a versatile multi-role platform and a force multiplier that complements the Malawi Air Force’s broader operational capabilities.
“The Fennec is a workhorse. It enables us to move people and equipment quickly, reach communities that roads cannot reach in time, and provide our commanders with the aerial awareness they need to make sound decisions. Having it back in the air makes us stronger and more useful to the nation,” said General Jaffu.
He added that the helicopter’s return would bolster operational readiness and improve the MDF’s ability to respond swiftly to emergencies, security challenges and humanitarian situations.
General Jaffu also expressed appreciation to His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi and Commander-in-Chief of the Malawi Defence Force, for supporting efforts to sustain the military’s aircraft fleet and maintain the airworthiness of its platforms.

“On behalf of the men and women of the Malawi Defence Force, I thank the President for his steadfast commitment to ensuring that our platforms remain airworthy. An overhaul of this kind requires significant resources, planning and political commitment. The return of this aircraft demonstrates that commitment in action,” he said.
The return of the AS550 A2 Fennec highlights the importance of aircraft maintenance and overhaul programmes in sustaining military aviation capabilities. Restoring existing platforms to service can help preserve valuable operational assets while improving their availability for future missions.
With the Fennec back in the fleet, the Malawi Air Force gains additional flexibility to support military operations and civilian assistance missions. Its reintroduction reinforces the MDF’s focus on maintaining a capable, responsive and mission-ready force in support of national security and public service.
